History of Palácio Estoril Hotel. - Famous people that visited Estoril

The Palácio Estoril Hotel, Golf & Spa commemorates 80 years since its inauguration, on 30 August 1930.

Eighty years after its opening, the Hotel Palácio Estoril is a single example of the good old-fashioned compared to modern times, remaining untouchable in its characteristics of a grand PALACE. Situated in a privileged location, there are only a few places like that around the world, which maintain in addition to their beauty,... faultless service, regular maintenance, and adequate updating to keep up with the modern world. In actual fact this GRAND Palácio Estoril HOTEL is still considered as one of the last posh places in Portugal and indeed a rare one in Europe.

The history of Palácio Estoril mixes reality with fiction: The Hotel went through a world war and a national revolution; it was also the stage of notable events in golden eras and it also served as a refuge for most European leaders in periods of crisis; it lodged spies and was as well the chosen venue for shooting films – like the famous Agent 007, James Bond movie, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. Nowadays it is one of the most sought after venues in Portugal for filming advertisement sceneries, for fashion publishing enterprises and big-star interviews.

Since the honeymoon of Prince Takamatsu, the brother of Emperor Hirohito of Japan in 1930 – which is considered as the zero year – the Palácio has been the chosen place in Portugal for the stay of countless kings, princes, as well as cinema, music and television stars, writers, collectors, politicians and businessmen. In the 40’s and 50’s it was chosen by members of the Spanish, Italian, French, Bulgarian, Albanian, and Romenian royal families. In the 60’s it was the turn of millionaires, actors and the newly emerging jet set personalities. In the 70’s and 80’s many of the big stars returned, and at the end of the XX century, the Palácio continued to receive members of the European royalty, music hall artists, car racing champions, actors and sportsmen.

The book of honour, the picture albums, and the guests records of the Hotel Palácio are valuable testimonies and proof: such as queen Vitoria Eugenia of Spain, all the Spanish royal family, princess Grace and prince Rainier of Monaco, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Graham Greene, Joan Baez and Madeleine Albright are but just a few of the hundreds of the famous guests who had chosen the Palácio in Estoril. The Hotel’s historical highlights were the wedding festivities of princess Maria Gabriela de Saboia in 1955, and that of the Spanish princess Pilar – the king’s daughter, in 1967.

The Palace was designed at the beginning of the XX century by the French architect Henry Martinet, copying other European fashionable places like Biarritz. The Palácio of Estoril has not aged, managing to keep up through the century and always with the mastery of the greatest and the best. Now, in 2010, whoever visits the salons and the terrace and walks around the garden that surrounds the swimming pool, and whoever is lodged in one of the magnificent rooms, that faces the sunset in the Cascais bay would believe that beauty and quality are everlasting and therefore are forever imprinted in the minds of the eye of the beholder. The Palácio Estoril continues to be preserved with professionalism by its current owners and to be fondly esteemed by its guests who in successive generations do not abandon it and keep on coming.

Today, the Palácio Estoril has completed its offer with the opening of the Banyan Tree Spa, one of the most prestigious in the world. The “Salons” of the Palácio, the bar, the
restaurants, the Bougainvillea Terrace, also recently opened, a lush garden and magnificent swimming pool, complete an extensive choice of rooms and suites, all renovated to confirm that after 80 years of activity without interruption, the Palácio Estoril is the Grand & Cosy Hotel, that always was and will be spoken at Estoril.
